Whānau health and well-being is underpinned and sustained by spiritual connotations, often connected to atua and the environment, as per the whakataukī (proverb): Ko te Awa te mātāpuna o te ora (the River is the source of spiritual and physical sustenance). Not only are whānau nourished by their environment, but whānau are called upon to reciprocate and care for their environment and for each other when looking at ways to recover from historical trauma.
