He Waka Eke Noa 2019–2022 | Ngā Wai a Te Tūī, Unitec Institute of Technology Ltd Lead Researcher: Prof Leonie Pihama | Researchers: Prof Linda Tuhiwai Smith, Shirley Simmonds, Rihi Te Nana, Ngaropi Cameron, Dr Cherryl Smith, Herearoha Skipper, Dr Bonnie Duran, community researchers from Te Puna Oranga, and Tū Tama Wahine o Taranaki This research project investigates the role of Māori cultural approaches to violence prevention and intervention. The research will investigate a range of explanations for violence in Aotearoa, both individual and collective, and ways through which culture can inform the development of successful approaches to violence reduction. This project has been developed collaboratively with Māori healers, social workers, and counsellors who have wide-ranging involvement and knowledge in working with whānau who have been impacted by either family or sexual violence. This project employs a mixed-method approach through both a survey and interviews, and will provide an evidence-based measure of the prevalence of family and sexual violence for Māori, and extend that to prevention and intervention grounded in Māori culturally defined programmes and initiatives.
