Senior Researcher

Te Atawhai o Te Ao is looking to employ a full-time Senior Researcher.

About us

Te Atawhai o Te Ao is an independent Māori research institute for environment and health. Our purpose is to be a community-led, globally recognised, indigenous research institute that generates and rediscovers knowledge focused on health and environment for the benefit of our people. Based in Whanganui, we whakapapa to our immediate environs, but embrace uri of all iwi and nations. We acknowledge the national and metaphysical identity markers that define our people and place.

About the role

The purpose of this role is to support the successful performance of Te Atawhai o Te Ao by leading research projects, publications and initiatives. In conjunction with our Director, you will provide research leadership across research projects and related activities of Te Atawhai o Te Ao. We are a small, close working team and so you will have opportunities to broaden and develop your existing skills.

You will be:

  • Leading and managing research projects
  • Developing project plans, methodologies and research outputs
  • Responsible for reporting including presenting research in an engaging manner
  • Developing and leading the implementation of a Māori Research Programme for Māori in schools
  • Developing, managing, and facilitating a training programme for indigenous scholars
  • Leading and contributing to the production of research outputs, including literature reviews, journal articles and research reports
  • Engaging in ongoing professional development that meets your and Te Atawhai o Te Ao’s needs

You will have:

  • A PhD or equivalent (this is a must have)
  • Experience in the academic sector preferred
  • Proven track record in publishing (not limited to academic journals)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including academic writing, ability to present to a wide audience, ability to develop and run effective workshops and trainings. The ability to engage effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and especially rangatahi (young people)
  • A working knowledge and understanding of Kaupapa Māori, Te Ao Māori, and tikanga Māori
  • Built local and international indigenous networks relevant to this role and have the ability to easily connect with and nurture new research and community networks.
  • Organisation, planning, and budgeting skills with the ability to manage multiple workstreams simultaneously
  • Ability to effectively contribute to and work well in a small team setting
